AIMS ACADEMY: Safeguarding

AIMS Academy intends to preserve and promote the emotional wellbeing of everybody; thus, staff and volunteers are all in a position to support in safeguarding the welfare of children. We do possess a variety of criteria including rules and regulations which falls under our safeguarding policies and procedures. This also entails integrating our child protection and safeguarding policy (available in the policies section).

At certain times, we will have to report to other agencies, if we do not expect a child to be safe from harm. By telling the parents/carers about all problems first unless we feel that something needs to be done immediately, in order to protect the child from further sufferings.

Our effort is directed to the Government’s plan on fighting radicalisation and extremism

Our team includes a designated person protecting children ____ and a deputy designated person protecting children _____.

On the one hand, vast majority of the parents and carers really like to watch the videos and photos of their children at the school, while on the upside, we are extremely vigilant and do our best to ensure safety and well-being of all our students. We believe in the importance of the use of images that will not harm the well-being of the people.

Similarly, snapshots or videos that are shared by parents, carers, and relatives during school events, class parties, or other related activities are done so with the full knowledge and permission for those parents, who took/created the image and/or video. It is not, therefore possible to use it in a manner that could end in harming a child. With all permissions in place, the posting of pictures in any form of print (newspaper article, brochure) or publishing them on the web (social networking sites), may take place. However, our policy and safeguarding measure will always be reiterated before shows and concerts etc and where possible a list of the parents and relatives will be made, of those that have given permission.

The community press, at times, will be allowed to take pictures of the school events or other accomplishments activities, so they can be published in their newspapers. We would like to assure you that privacy of your child is our utmost priority. If you do not want pictures of your child to be used in any of the above-mentioned campaigns, please contact the Head Master.

AIMS ACADEMY: Disclosure / Reporting

What is Disclosure? Disclosure in safeguarding, as it pertains to the role of an Ofsted inspector in the UK, involves the process of sharing information about any concerns or incidents that could indicate a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of harm. It is a crucial component of safeguarding aimed at protecting individuals, ensuring legal compliance, facilitating early intervention, and fostering a safe environment. Inspectors evaluate how organisations manage disclosures, including their procedures for making, recording, and responding to them, to ensure a robust and effective safeguarding culture is in place.

If you would like to report a concern please complete the form below and a member of the safeguarding team will be in contact: safeguarding@aimsacademy.co.uk.

AIMS ACADEMY: Statement

In our school environment, child safety and safekeeping-(i.e. protecting them from any harm, abuse and neglect)- is the underlying principal, that guides us. It is one of our main concerns to build a safe, welcoming atmosphere – one free of violence, abuse and other threats – where every kid has the right to be free from harm and to feel good while getting an education.

Safeguarding ensures, among other things, online and offline child protection, physical safety measures, site security and peer relationship support that is guided by key DFE documents and legislation that provide for holistic emotional, physical and mental well-being.

Our team get training on Children Protection and Safeguarding matters every year. They are known to lookout for the signs of distress in the students and also tackle the abuse. They also know how to proceed with the outside agencies with any abuse cases.

The Safeguarding team remain reachable at all times for anything that concerns you about their well-being or safety. Pupils and their parents can contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead or the Deputy, directly by phone or email at safeguarding@aimsacademy.co.uk.

All in all we aim to have very close cooperation with parents around issues of safeguarding and typically we seek their consent before doing any external referral, however, there may be cases when we must act promptly for the sake of the child which would allow us to protect a child without any prior parents consultations.

AIMS ACADEMY: Information

In today's world, it's essential for everyone to maintain connections, ensure online safety, verify information accurately, and take regular breaks to support their mental health.

Mental health significantly influences how you engage with the world and its challenges. Good mental well-being enhances resilience, aiding in coping with difficult periods, though at times, external support might be necessary.

If you're concerned about your mental health, please contact safeguarding@aimsacademy.co.uk. Our safeguarding team can offer support and direct you to suitable services or provide assistance themselves.

SEND Resources

The coronavirus pandemic has led to substantial changes, particularly affecting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). If you're a parent or carer concerned about managing your child's care, education at home, and well-being while balancing work, we have compiled a list of resources to support you and your child during these challenging times.

External Support Agencies

Acknowledging the pressures that can mount during uncertain times, we've listed various agencies capable of offering support through these challenges.

Online Safety

At AIMS Academy, we're dedicated to ensuring our pupils understand online safety and how to handle unwanted online contact. It's equally important for parents/carers to be aware of the online risks their children may face. Therefore, we've created a page with online safety resources for both children and parents.

Be vigilant, as some may seek to exploit the current situation. Risks include oversharing, unwanted contact from strangers, commercial exploitation, and radicalisation. For any concerns, please contact safeguarding@aimsacademy.co.uk.

AIMS ACADEMY: Mental Health

In the heart of the UK, the mental and emotional well-being of our young people within schools has never been more pressing. With each passing day, our students face a myriad of challenges that touch the very core of their emotional resilience and well-being. Here's a heartfelt look at the primary mental health concerns that shadow our young learners' lives, along with a guide to the sanctuaries of support available to them:

  • Anxiety and Stress: The looming shadows of exams and academic expectations can be overwhelming.
  • Depression: A heavy cloak of persistent sadness that dims the light of everyday joys.
  • Eating Disorders: Battles with one's reflection and societal expectations, a fight for acceptance and love.
  • Self-Harm: A silent scream for help, a physical manifestation of internal turmoil.
  • Suicidal Thoughts: When the pain becomes too much, and the thought of escape whispers dangerously.
  • Bullying and Cyberbullying: Cruel words and actions that wound deeply, leaving scars on young hearts.
  • Substance Abuse: A desperate attempt to numb the pain or fill the void within.
  • ADHD: A restless mind seeking peace in a world that doesn't pause.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): Navigating a world that doesn't always understand or accommodate.
  • Trauma and PTSD: Echoes of past horrors that haunt the present, stealing peace.

Our schools stand as beacons of hope, striving to light the way for those lost in the darkness of mental health struggles. Early detection and compassionate intervention pave the path to healing and understanding.

Guidance for carers:

Carers UK - Guidance for carers:

In a move by the Government, a guide has been offered to parents and carers across the UK: a support document titled 'Advice to parents and carers on keeping children safe from abuse and harm.' This beacon of hope delves into the ways we can shield our children from the shadows that might lurk in their lives. It's a testament to our shared commitment to nurturing and protecting the innocence and joy of our young ones.

The document is a carefully crafted map, guiding us through the complexities of safeguarding our children. It covers critical areas such as shielding our little ones from the scars of domestic abuse, the hidden dangers of child sexual abuse and exploitation, and the dark world of crime, including criminal exploitation and the threats posed by violence, gangs, and county lines. It doesn't stop there; it also addresses the vital need to protect children from the whispers of radicalisation, the ever-present risks of online harm, and the often-overlooked aspect of their mental well-being.

Each section is a chapter of understanding and action, offering insight and practical steps to reduce the risks of harm, ensuring our children can grow in a world where their safety is held as sacred. It's a call to arms for all parents and carers to stand vigilant, to be the guardians of joy and the protectors of peace in our children's lives.

For those who feel the weight of this responsibility, know that you're not alone. Guidance awaits at the Government's dedicated page, a resource designed to empower and support you in this most crucial role. Let's take this journey together, for in unity, we find strength, and in knowledge, we find the power to protect.

What OUR Young People Are Saying:

  • More than half of LGBQT+ young individuals (53 per cent) feel there is no adult in their school or college with whom they can discuss their LGBQT+ identity.
  • Three-fifths of LGBQT+ young individuals (60 per cent) lack an adult confidante at home.
  • Two-fifths of LGBQT+ young individuals (40 per cent) have not received any education on LGBQT+ matters at school.
  • Two-thirds of LGBQT+ young individuals (66 per cent) report their school offers no assistance in accessing resources for support.
  • One-third of transgender young people (33 per cent) cannot use their chosen name at school, while three-fifths (58 per cent) are restricted from using the toilets where they feel most comfortable.
  • Nearly half of LGBQT+ young individuals (45 per cent) – including 64 per cent of transgender young people – experience bullying for being LGBQT+ in school or college.
  • Over two-fifths of LGBQT+ students in sixth form colleges (44 per cent) and half of those in further education (FE) colleges (49 per cent) frequently hear homophobic language.
  • It's crucial to acknowledge that different segments within the LGBTQ+ youth community may encounter distinct or additional challenges.

The takeaway is the importance of recognising and addressing the specific and varied challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth in educational environments.
